suicide clubSuicide Club: A Novel About Living by Rachel Heng (Henry Holt and Co., July 10)

Set in future NYC, this is a family drama wrapped up in sci-fi ribbons. Lea Kirino has the potential to live forever (literally), but when she runs into her estranged father on the sidewalk and becomes drawn into the Suicide Club, she learns just how precarious and implausible forever can be. A refreshingly original debut.

okay fine whateverOkay Fine Whatever: The Year I Went from Being Afraid of Everything to Only Being Afraid of Most Things by Courtenay Hameister (Little, Brown & Company, July 31)

This was as charming and funny as I wanted it to be. As someone who is afraid of pretty much everything, I really appreciated this book. Hameister decide to face some of her fears and writes about her experiences. Chapters include “An Hour with a Professional Cuddler: In Wherein I Learn Not to Hate Affirmations. As Much” and “Getting Legally High: In Which I Learn That Some People Just Shouldn’t Smoke Pot.”

And this is funny.

This tweet is not book related but it made me actually laugh out loud.

there thereThere There by Tommy Orange (Knopf, June 5)

Get ready to start hearing about this book everywhere. It’s a powerful, contemporary, multi-generational portrait of Native Americans in the United States, revolving around several people coming together at a powwow. There are people hoping to repair rifts, defeat addiction, participate in culture, and also cause grief. It’s a devastating and sad novel, but also filled to the brim with beauty and hope. This one will stay with you for a long time.

gods monsters and the lucky peachGods, Monsters, and the Lucky Peach by Kelly Robson (Tor.com, March 13)

I am beginning to think that Tor.com publishes books just for me, because I love every single one! This is a fantastic, weird future Earth story, about a future people (some of whom now have tentacles for legs) who travel back in time to learn about the devastation caused by climate change. In observing the floods, they hope to correct things in the future. But there is also politics, red tape, and banking issues to contend with. And even more stuff that I am doing a bad job describing. Just trust me: This book is hella fun.

And this is funny.

Here is Noelle Stevenson’s adorable cat.

The Trauma Cleaner cover image: a yellow latex glove with a spot of blood on the tip of the index fingerThe Trauma Cleaner: One Woman’s Extraordinary Life in the Business of Death, Decay, and Disaster by Sarah Krasnostein (St. Martin’s Press, April 10)

I am a fan of books that wreck me, and HOLY CATS, did this one fit the bill. The true story of the remarkable life of Sandra Pankhurst, a woman in Australia who was raised as a boy in a violent home, became a husband and father, had gender confirmation surgery, worked as a sex worker, and is a now a wife and businesswoman, the owner of a cleaning company that specializes in trauma cleanups. She goes in and takes care of messes that 99.99999% of the population couldn’t fathom. But it is her amazing spirit and belief in kindness, and Krasnostein’s storytelling, that make this such a fascinating, life-affirming story.

the girl who smiled beadsThe Girl Who Smiled Beads: A Story of War and What Comes After by Clemantine Wamariya and Elizabeth Weil (Crown, April 24)

In 1994, Wamariya and her sister fled the Rwandan massacre and spent the next several years walking through other African countries in search of safety before they were granted refugee status by the United States. This is her story about her two lives, one of fear and death, and the other seemingly the American dream but always shadowed by her past. I haven’t had a chance to read this one yet but it is at the top of my list!

And this is funny.

Nerdy puns, yo.

A hilarious look at the rudeness that’s all around us—where it comes from, how it affects us and what we can do about it—from the brilliant comedic mind behind the hit movie Yes Man.

You’re not just imagining it: People are getting more rude – from cutting in line, gabbing on their phones and clipping their nails on public transportation, to hurling epithets on Twitter and in real life (including a certain President who does both). And the worst part is that it’s contagious…

Danny Wallace’s engaging and illuminating new book examines the scourge that’s turning normal people into bullies, tantruming toddlers, trolls, and other types of everyday monsters—and shares what we can do to stop the madness.

ursula k le guin conversations on writingUrsula K. Le Guin: Conversations on Writing by Ursula K. Le Guin and David Naimo (Tin House Books, July 17)

The death of Le Guin last week was a tremendous loss to literature. I loved her novels, but recently discovered I love her nonfiction even more. She was brilliant, acerbic, blisteringly funny, and wildly empathetic. This is a slim collection of her discussing writing, always a treat. She will be greatly missed.

not my white saviorNot My White Savior: A Memoir in Poems by Julayne Lee (Rare Bird Books, March 13)

Holy cats, I cried so much reading this book. When Lee was a baby, she was adopted from South Korea and brought to Minnesota by a white Christian family. This is her beautiful, angry memoir about her loss of identity and the damage caused by being raised in an strict environment where she was repeatedly told how lucky she was, not to mention all the ignorant remarks people made to her about her heritage, her looks, and her homeland. This is a powerful book.

Acclaimed author Nick Harkaway presents a near-future, high-tech novel that is equal parts dark comedy, detective story, and mind-bending philosophical puzzle.

The System has created the safest society in history by monitoring all citizens’ thoughts and memories. So when a woman dies in government custody—the first person killed during an interrogation—Inspector Mielikki Neith is assigned to find out what went wrong. What she uncovers in the woman’s tangled memories will have staggering consequences that will reverberate throughout the world. A dazzling achievement, Gnomon is profound, captivating, and irreverent—a story of matchless wit infused with a deep humanity.

Naledi is a doesn’t have time for nonsense, especially emails claiming she’s bethrothed to an African prince. But when said prince shows up, he decides to win her over without revealing his royalty. This is a delightful Cinderella/Prince and the Pauper tale from one of the most wonderful writers in the biz.

blood water paintBlood Water Paint by Joy McCullough

(TW for sexual assault.) This is a gorgeous, heartbreaking novel in verse about the real-life painter Artemisia Gentileschi, considered to be one of the most talented painters of her time, and the true story of how her father sued for ‘property damage’ after she was raped by her instructor. Make no mistake, her story is brutal, as is her quest for justice, but it is also filled with hope and an important message that women’s voices cannot be silenced.

And this is funny.

Hari Kunzru has his 2018 priorities straight.

American PandaAmerican Panda by Gloria Chao (Simon Pulse, February 6, 2018)

After skipping a grade when she was young, Mei is now a 17-year-old in her first year at MIT, on track to do all the things her parents want her to do, starting with becoming a doctor. But Mei realizes she doesn’t want to go into the medical field, and she has a crush on a boy who is not Taiwanese and therefore off-limits, according to her parents. How does Mei lead the life that she chooses for herself and still remain a part of her family? This is a laugh-out loud, delightful novel about identity and family.

our lady of the prairieOur Lady of the Prairie by Thisbe Nissen (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, January 23, 2018)

There’s a hurricane headed to town, but that’s the least of Phillipa’s problems. The theater professor has just had a passionate affair while teaching away from home, now is returning for her daughter’s wedding, where she will have to endure her menacing mother-in-law, her husband, and all the baggage she left behind while she was gone. But what would happen if she walked away? Nissen’s sharp, funny novel explores what it means when a woman stands up for herself and starts putting herself first in her own life.

And this is funny.

I love John Scalzi’s cats.
