First Tuesday of April Megalist!

Holy cats, how is it April already??? I am happy that April is here, because there are sooooooo many amazing books out this month – starting with today! It’s an embarrassment of riches.

Sponsored by Epic Reads

Jane McKeene was born two days before the dead began to walk the battlefields of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. In this new America, safety for all depends on the work of a few, and laws like the Negro and Native Reeducation Act require certain children attend combat schools to learn kill the dead. Jane is trained in both weaponry and etiquette to protect the well-to-do and although it’s a chance for a better life for Negro girls like Jane, it’s not a life she wants.

But when families around Baltimore County begin to go missing, Jane learns the restless dead are the least of her problems.

Enjoy your upcoming week, and be excellent to each other. – xoxo, Liberty

Sponsored by Flatiron Books

Following two sisters in their pursuit of passion and independence, this is a genre-bending novel that is part coming-of-age, part historical fiction, with elements of mystery and paranormal. When one of the sisters goes missing, the other must put aside her books to find her–and start living.

temper by nicky draydenTemper by Nicky Drayden (Harper Voyager, August 7)

Hey, remember that amazing, bananapants book The Prey of Gods? Well, get excited, because she has a new one and it too is a wild delight! It’s about the relationship between twin brothers – one of whom is (literally) branded the lesser twin – which becomes really messy when demonic possession enters their lives. They must work together to thwart the demons before someone loses his – wait for it – temper. Drayden is such an imaginative writer and this one gets two possessed thumbs up!

spinning silverSpinning Silver by Naomi Novik (Del Rey, July 10)

Despite the similar covers, this is not an Uprooted sequel. It is, however, a highly inventive and fun interpretation of the classic fairytale Rumpelstitskin. (You know, the one where the lady tries to weasel out of her end of the bargain by guessing the little man’s name?) In this one, the scary creatures in the woods hear that the moneylender’s daughter, Miryam, can turn silver into gold. (Actually she’s just good at her job, but scary creatures don’t care about that.) Told from several perspectives, Novik weaves a remarkable tale of family, honor, and bravery.

And this is funny.

I am heavily invested in the adventures of Kelly Link’s cat.

Alice is dismayed when an old friend turns up in Tangier after an accident that caused a rift between them a year earlier. Then her husband goes missing. Suddenly everything Alice knows and believes gets turned on its head, and she will have to sort out the truth – even if it changes everything. What a debut! This is a slow burning, atmospheric suspense novel that has already been picked up as a film!

Backlist bump: The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith

Aru Shah and the End of Time by Roshani ChokshiAru Shah and the End of Time by Roshani Chokshi

A fantastic start to a new middle grade series! (We can never have too many!) This is a wonderful story about a young girl named Aru who is spending her summer break in the Museum of Ancient Indian Art and Culture. Oh, and she kinda accidentally awakens an ancient demon. In the ensuing chaos, Aru’s mother and classmates are frozen in time, and it’s up to Aru to save them. This book is a delight. I loooooved it.

Backlist bump: Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend

herding catsHerding Cats: A Sarah’s Scribbles Collection by Sarah Andersen

A new collection from Sarah Andersen is a reason to celebrate. When I read her comics, I feel SEEN. I love her takes on life, whether it’s imposter syndrome, her love of cats and books, her body image, or her love of sleep and solitude. She is the best!

circeCirce by Madeline Miller (April 10, Little, Brown and Company)

There are not enough words to describe how much I love Miller’s follow-up to The Song of Achilles, a retelling of the Greek mythology of Circe, daughter of the god of the sun, who was banished to an island for fear of her powers, and the iconic mythology characters she encounters there, as well as the complex tale of her life. Miller turns Circe into a strong, flawed heroine, and this book does her tremendous justice.

the baghdad clockThe Baghdad Clock by Shahad Al Rawi,‎ Luke Leafgren (Translator) (May 8, OneWorld Publications)

Shortlisted for the Arabic Booker Prize, this little gem follows the lives of two little girls who meet during the Iraq War and become lifelong friends in the face of bombing, conflicts, and civil war, and how their relationship survives. Perfect for fans of The Kite Runner.

Joining in on his scheme are Zane’s girlfriend, his gardener, the film’s writer, and the director. The plan quickly turns into a wicked game of switching sides, blackmail, betrayal, and greed. Will anyone come out a winner?

the gunnersThe Gunners by Rebecca Kauffman

In Kauffman’s fantastic second novel, Mikey Callahan struggles to make human connections as he loses his sight to macular degeneration, starting with his reunited group of childhood friends, “The Gunners.” This is a beautiful, funny story about reconnecting with your past and trying to make sense of the present.

Backlist bump: Another Place You’ve Never Been by Rebecca Kauffman

the past is neverThe Past is Never by Tiffany Quay Tyson

A compelling Southern Gothic about a missing child who seems to have just vanished from the old rock quarry. Local legends tell of something sinister that haunts the town, but when no explanation and no child are found, the devastated family moves on. Until years later, when they will discover that some things are better left unknown.

Backlist bump: The Summer That Melted Everything by Tiffany McDaniel

the fighterThe Fighter by Michael Farris Smith

I didn’t mean to recommend two books set in the Mississippi Delta (see above), it just happened that way! This is a dark novel of violence, betrayal, and danger, about an aging boxer who seeks to repay his gambling debts, only to have the money stolen. Now he must fight once again – this time for his life. If you like Daniel Woodrell, Donald Ray Pollock, or Harry Crewes, this is the book for you!

There are contributions by Carmen Maria Machado, Benjamin Percy, Amelia Gray, Adam Sternbergh, Yuri Herrera, Julia Elliott, Elizabeth Hand, Brian Evenson, Charles Yu, Laura van den Berg, and more!

And this is funny.

First Tuesday of March Megalist!

It’s the first new book Tuesday of the month – time to topple Mount TBR! Such an amazing selection of incredible books out today. First Tuesday is my favorite Tuesday because WOW what a huge assortment!

I have a few awesome books for you below and you can hear about several more great titles on this week’s episode of the All the Books! Amanda and I talked about a few amazing books we loved, includingChildren of Blood and Bone,Whiskey & Ribbons,Girls Burn Brighter, and more.

Sponsored by The Reluctant Fortune-Teller by Keziah Frost, new from Park Row Books.

At seventy-three years old, Norbert Zelenka’s life on the sidelines has left him broke and alone. But when three strong-willed seniors decide to make him their latest project, he reluctantly agrees to their scheme: establishing himself as the town’s fortune-teller. As Norbert’s lonesome world expands, he finally finds a place where he belongs. But disaster looms on the horizon. When a troubled young woman goes missing after a reading, Norbert must find a strength beyond the cards to bring her home safely. The Reluctant Fortune-Teller is a poignant reminder that we’re never too old to learn new tricks.

(And like with each megalist, I’m putting a ❤️ next to the books that I have read and loved. There are soooo many more on this list that I can’t wait to read!)

suicide clubSuicide Club: A Novel About Living by Rachel Heng (Henry Holt and Co., July 10)

Set in future NYC, this is a family drama wrapped up in sci-fi ribbons. Lea Kirino has the potential to live forever (literally), but when she runs into her estranged father on the sidewalk and becomes drawn into the Suicide Club, she learns just how precarious and implausible forever can be. A refreshingly original debut.

okay fine whateverOkay Fine Whatever: The Year I Went from Being Afraid of Everything to Only Being Afraid of Most Things by Courtenay Hameister (Little, Brown & Company, July 31)

This was as charming and funny as I wanted it to be. As someone who is afraid of pretty much everything, I really appreciated this book. Hameister decide to face some of her fears and writes about her experiences. Chapters include “An Hour with a Professional Cuddler: In Wherein I Learn Not to Hate Affirmations. As Much” and “Getting Legally High: In Which I Learn That Some People Just Shouldn’t Smoke Pot.”

And this is funny.

This tweet is not book related but it made me actually laugh out loud.
