A Secret Prince, False Accusations, and More New Books

Happy Tuesday! I am so happy that Tess of the Road by Rachel Hartman is finally out! It is set in the same universe as her amazing Seraphina series. (If you haven’t read those, you should. Like, right now. I’ll wait here.) And at the top of my to-buy list for today is The Sea Beast Takes a Lover: Stories by Michael Andreasen. THAT COVER. And don’t forget the the Jeff VanderMeer story, The Strange Bird, comes out today. It’s set in the Borne universe and is super rad!

I have a few awesome books for you below and you can hear about several more great titles on this week’s episode of the All the Books! Rebecca and I talked about a few amazing books we loved, including Don’t Call Me Princess, All the Names They Used for God, Baby Monkey, Private Eye, and more.

a girl like thatA Girl Like That by Tanaz Bhathena

WARNING: This book will break your heart. I am not spoiling anything by telling you the main character will die. It doesn’t change the fact that you should read it! A Girl Like That is a very powerful, complex story of racism, rape culture, religion, bullying, love, and more. So many serious issues tackled in one book! Zarin is a wonderful character, a sixteen-year-old girl full of life and promise, and the story of how she comes to die in a car accident in Saudi Arabia is a heart-wrenching tale, but an important one. Add Tanaz Bhathena to the top of the list of new voices to watch.

Backlist bump: All the Rage by Courtney Summers

a princess in theoryA Princess in Theory: Reluctant Royals by Alyssa Cole

WHOOP! WHOOP! WHOOP! A new series from Alyssa Cole! I know you don’t even need me to tell you it’s the cat’s pajamas. BUT IT IS. Naledi is a doesn’t have time for nonsense, especially emails claiming she’s betrothed to an African prince. But when that very prince shows up, he decides to win her over without revealing his royalty. This is a delightful Cinderella-slash-Prince and the Pauper tale from one of the most wonderful writers in the biz.

Backlist bump: An Extraordinary Union (The Loyal League) by Alyssa Cole

the cadaver kingThe Cadaver King and the Country Dentist: A True Story of Injustice in the American South by Radley Balko and Tucker Carrington

My 2018 goal of reading more nonfiction led me to this horrifying yet fascinating book, about two men who spent a combined three decades in prison for a crime they didn’t commit, based on the testimony of two appointed professionals, who turned out to be not just bad at their jobs but bad at being decent humans. This is a (sadly unsurprising) tale of racism and prejudice that will leave you stunned.

Backlist bump: Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America by Ibram X. Kendi

That’s it for me today – time to get back to reading! there thereThere There by Tommy Orange (Knopf, June 5)

Get ready to start hearing about this book everywhere. It’s a powerful, contemporary, multi-generational portrait of Native Americans in the United States, revolving around several people coming together at a powwow. There are people hoping to repair rifts, defeat addiction, participate in culture, and also cause grief. It’s a devastating and sad novel, but also filled to the brim with beauty and hope. This one will stay with you for a long time.

gods monsters and the lucky peachGods, Monsters, and the Lucky Peach by Kelly Robson (Tor.com, March 13)

I am beginning to think that Tor.com publishes books just for me, because I love every single one! This is a fantastic, weird future Earth story, about a future people (some of whom now have tentacles for legs) who travel back in time to learn about the devastation caused by climate change. In observing the floods, they hope to correct things in the future. But there is also politics, red tape, and banking issues to contend with. And even more stuff that I am doing a bad job describing. Just trust me: This book is hella fun.

And this is funny.

Here is Noelle Stevenson’s adorable cat.

True Love at Bingo, Strange Births, and More New Books

Happy Tuesday! Did you get the day off yesterday? Me either. But every day is still a great day when you get to read books after you’re done your work! I hope you’re all reading something amazing. I have a few awesome books for you below and you can hear about several more great titles on this week’s episode of the All the Books! Jenn and I talked about a few amazing books we loved, including Sunburn, Eloquent Rage, Dreadful Young Ladies, and more.

OOOOOO! And this is awesome: be sure to head over to our Instagram account to enter to win $500 of Penguin Clothbound classics!

We’ve all had those days when everything changes and suddenly you must reckon with the new you. Between a religious family, sexual harassment at work, and dealing with the heartache of his sort-of ex, Adam’s life is falling apart.  His new boyfriend and best friend have kept him sane, but on this day, old memories and new disappointments come crashing together, throwing life into chaos. Yet despite everything he has to let go, he may also find freedom in the release.

Patrick Ness weaves a deeply affecting story about what happens when the walls we build start coming down.

ambiguity machinesAmbiguity Machines: and Other Stories by Vandana Singh

Any time Small Beer Press publishes a new book is a reason to celebrate! This is their most recent astonishing story collection. The stories combine Singh’s scientific background with her vivd imagination and delivers a fantastic group of fantastical stories and a novella.

Backlist bump: Tender by Sofia Samatar

bingo loveBingo Love by Tee Franklin and Jenn St. Onge

I know that Jenn discussed this on the podcast but I just want to reiterate how amazing this is. Such a colorful, wonderfully illustrated comic about true love between two women who are kept apart when they are young and reunited decades later. It’s sad, no doubt, but also so heartwarming and inspirational. I lurved it.

Backlist bump: Lumberjanes Vol. 1: Beware The Kitten Holy by Noelle Stevenson and Shannon Watters

the rending and the nestThe Rending and the Nest by Kaethe Schwehn

It was bad enough when 95 percent of the population disappears without a reason, but when women begin giving birth to inanimate objects, it is obvious that supernatural forces are at work. The small community cobbled together after the disappearances to maintain some sort of normalcy begins to unravel, and friendships will be tested. The Rending and the Nest is an inventive post-apocalyptic debut about loyalty, fear, and love.

Backlist bump: The Children of Men by PD James

The Trauma Cleaner cover image: a yellow latex glove with a spot of blood on the tip of the index fingerThe Trauma Cleaner: One Woman’s Extraordinary Life in the Business of Death, Decay, and Disaster by Sarah Krasnostein (St. Martin’s Press, April 10)

I am a fan of books that wreck me, and HOLY CATS, did this one fit the bill. The true story of the remarkable life of Sandra Pankhurst, a woman in Australia who was raised as a boy in a violent home, became a husband and father, had gender confirmation surgery, worked as a sex worker, and is a now a wife and businesswoman, the owner of a cleaning company that specializes in trauma cleanups. She goes in and takes care of messes that 99.99999% of the population couldn’t fathom. But it is her amazing spirit and belief in kindness, and Krasnostein’s storytelling, that make this such a fascinating, life-affirming story.

the girl who smiled beadsThe Girl Who Smiled Beads: A Story of War and What Comes After by Clemantine Wamariya and Elizabeth Weil (Crown, April 24)

In 1994, Wamariya and her sister fled the Rwandan massacre and spent the next several years walking through other African countries in search of safety before they were granted refugee status by the United States. This is her story about her two lives, one of fear and death, and the other seemingly the American dream but always shadowed by her past. I haven’t had a chance to read this one yet but it is at the top of my list!

And this is funny.

Nerdy puns, yo.

A hilarious look at the rudeness that’s all around us—where it comes from, how it affects us and what we can do about it—from the brilliant comedic mind behind the hit movie Yes Man.

You’re not just imagining it: People are getting more rude – from cutting in line, gabbing on their phones and clipping their nails on public transportation, to hurling epithets on Twitter and in real life (including a certain President who does both). And the worst part is that it’s contagious…

Danny Wallace’s engaging and illuminating new book examines the scourge that’s turning normal people into bullies, tantruming toddlers, trolls, and other types of everyday monsters—and shares what we can do to stop the madness.

A daughter deaths with her grief and guilt over her mother’s death in this heart-squeezing novel. Leigh is sure that when her mother died, she turned into a bird. And she is certain she will find her mother-bird in Taiwan, when she visits her mother’s parents. But what she finds instead are family secrets and ghosts, and she must learn to forgive herself and her mother for what happened. You’re going to need tissues.

betwixt and betweenBetwixt-and-Between: Essays on the Writing Life by Jenny Boully (Coffee House Press, April 3)

Fans of Maggie Nelson and Jenny Offill will love this collection of memoir-essays (messays?) about Boully’s life and relationships, mixed in with her passion for her art and where her creativity comes from. I was really blown away by the writing.

And this is funny.

The Hazel Wood by Melissa AlbertThe Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert

Holy cats, I loved this book! It’s about a teen girl named Alice who has lived her whole life moving place to place with her mom. The only thing Alice knows about the rest of her family is that her grandmother once wrote a famous, but obscure, book of fairy tales. Then Alice’s mother goes missing shortly after word of the death of Alice’s grandmother, and Alice learns that maybe the land her grandmother wrote about wasn’t made up after all, and if she wants her mother back, she’ll have to visit it. I loved everything about this book: the language, the story, the descriptions. And whether it is a stand-alone or first in a series, I am thrilled with it either way.

Backlist bump: Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire.

cover of tempestTempest by Beverly Jenkins

Jenkins is back with another wonderful, steamy tale in her Old West series! Regan is a mail-order bride, sent to meet her intended in the wilds of Wyoming Territory. When she accidentally shoots Colton, the man she’s supposed to marry, she has to wonder if it’s a sign that she’s made a bad choice. Colton wanted someone to look after his daughter. But in Regan, he may have found his match – and his soul mate. (Er, apart from the whole accidental shooting thing.) Can the two make a marriage of convenience into something more?

Backlist bump: Forbidden by Beverly Jenkins

black fortunesBlack Fortunes: The Story of the First Six African Americans Who Escaped Slavery and Became Millionaires by Shomari Wills

A fascinating, rarely discussed part of American history, about six former slaves – including the author’s great-great-great-grandfather – who became self-made millionaires in the Roaring 20s, and how they achieved their wealth.

Backlist bump: The Strange Career of William Ellis: The Texas Slave Who Became a Mexican Millionaire by Karl Jacoby

ursula k le guin conversations on writingUrsula K. Le Guin: Conversations on Writing by Ursula K. Le Guin and David Naimo (Tin House Books, July 17)

The death of Le Guin last week was a tremendous loss to literature. I loved her novels, but recently discovered I love her nonfiction even more. She was brilliant, acerbic, blisteringly funny, and wildly empathetic. This is a slim collection of her discussing writing, always a treat. She will be greatly missed.

speak no evilSpeak No Evil by Uzodinma Iweala (Harper, March 6)

An emotional, wrenching new novel from the author of Beasts of No Nation, about a young Nigerian American in a D.C. high school who is amazing at athletics and has been accepted to Harvard. But he’s feeling emotionally tormented from trying to hide the fact that he is gay from his conservative parents, who consider it a sin.

And this is funny.

Mat Johnson + 90s song reference = perfection.
