How amazing is this book? So amazing that it got picked up by a larger publisher after its initial release for a larger release! It’s an incredible queer coming-of-age story about Juliet Milagros Palante from the Bronx, who flies to Oregon to intern with her favorite feminist writer, and has a summer full of highs and lows, learning all about being comfortable in your skin, and sorting out the complications that arise with her mom.

Loved, loved, loved:

the returnThe Return by Rachel Harrison (Berkley, March 24, 2020)

So many people told me this was amazing, and brilliant, and creepy, and THEY WERE RIGHT. It’s about four best friends from college, and what happens when one disappears for two years, then shows up again with no memory of what happened. First of all, I really dig that she went missing in Maine, because Maine can be spooky for sure! (Why do you think Stephen King is the way he is?!) And I love the dynamics between the friends, and what a bitch it is sometimes when someone knows you so well. And also how Harrison has seemingly made even interior design seem threatening. I loved it.

Librarian Detectives and More Exciting News for CHECK YOUR SHELF!

Hi-ho, Kermit the Frog here!

Wait, no, lemme start again.

Hello, book lovers! It’s Liberty Hardy again, sitting in again today while Katie McLain finishes up her vacation. I’m excited to be doing this again today, because as I mentioned last week, my mother was a librarian for most of my childhood, so I was practically raised in the library. (But don’t let that frighten you into keeping your kids away from the library. It took a lot more than that for me to turn out this weird. They’ll be fine.)

So I have more bookish news and lists for you today, to keep you up-to-date on the happenings in library land, and some useful resources for keeping up with upcoming releases. So buckle in!

And remember, Katie says: “Starting September 17th, you’ll be getting TWO doses of Check Your Shelf in your inboxes each week on Tuesdays and Fridays! Tuesdays will focus on collection development and book lists, while Fridays will be more about news-y items. Thank you to all you readers who have made this newsletter such a success!!”

Check Your Shelf

Tonga’s Very First Public Library and Exciting News for CHECK YOUR SHELF!

Hello, book lovers!

It’s Liberty Hardy, sitting in these next two weeks while Katie McLain is on vacation. I’m excited to do this, because I am a library brat. My mother was a librarian for most of my childhood, and I spent thousands of hours in our hometown library, reading books while she worked. And then when I got older, also working the desk, shelving, emptying the returns box, straightening the card catalog, and putting plastic jackets on the books, because my mother had no fear of child labor laws. (It was still a good part of it, too, though.)

I always thought I would grow up to be a librarian, but I also thought I would grow up to marry George Michael. Hey, sometimes these things just don’t work out. But I am happy to be working in the book industry and I am happy to be sharing news with you today!

(It will now be books I loved on Mondays and books I’m excited to read on Thursdays. YAY, BOOKS!)

Excited to read:

redhead by the side of the roadRedhead by the Side of the Road by Anne Tyler (Knopf, April 7, 2020)

NEW ANNE TYLER. I read everything she writes. She is my go-to comfort read. I have always loved her, since I was a kid. Favorite Tyler novel? Saint Maybe. There was something a few years ago in an interview where I swear I heard that she said she wasn’t going to publish anymore novels after she reached her twentieth one, but I am glad that has turned out not to be true. This one is about a meticulously organized tech programmer whose life is tipped into chaos when a teenager arrives, claiming to be his son. I can’t wait! Tyler is so good at human nature.

What I’m reading this week.

docile k.m. szparaDocile by K.M. Szpara

The Knockout Queen: A Novel by Rufi Thorpe

Last Couple Standing: A Novel by Matthew Norman

Think Black: A Memoir by Clyde W. Ford

The Silvered Serpents by Roshani Chokshi

And this is funny.

Hahahaha.

Trivia answer: Stuart Townsend.

You made it to the bottom! High five. Thanks for reading! – xo, L

First Tuesday of September Megalist!

Ready your TBR list because – *trumpet sounds* – it’s the first Tuesday of the month! That means I have a great big list of titles coming out today for you to peruse and drool over. And you can hear about some of these and more amazing books on this week’s episode of the All the Books! Rebecca and I talked about Butterfly Yellow, Revolution of the Soul, Cold Storage, and more.

And more fun news: be sure to enter Book Riot’s giveaway of the year’s 10 best mystery/thrillers so far!

(And like with each megalist, I’m putting a ❤️ next to the books that I have had the chance to read and loved. It has been slow reading for me the last few months, so I haven’t read as many as I wished, but I did get to a few of today’s books.
