Nicola and David Yoon are Ready to “Change the World” with Joy Revolution Imprint

Committed to publishing young adult romance novels starring people of color written by people of color, Nicola and David Yoon’s imprint Joy Revolution is set to publish its first list in spring 2023. David and Nicola note that so many novels featuring characters of color focus on the “struggle or trauma” and that the characters and stories are mostly centered around “teach[ing] a largely white audience about racism.” Of course, stories like these are important to tell, but both Nicole and David want to remind readers that “there’s a whole other side to our existence besides trauma.” David explains, “We don’t wake up thinking, ‘Oh, I’m Black,’ or ‘I’m Asian’…Depicting people of color just as being human and experiencing all the normal things is quietly revolutionary.” Joy Revolution’s spring 2023 lineup features young adult novels from bestselling authors Talia Hibbert and Amalie Howard. Highly Suspicious and Unfairly Cute by Hibbert will be on sale in January, and Howard’s Queen Bee hits shelves in April.

Prepare Your Shelves!

cover of daisy darker by alice feeney, illustration of a house on jagged cliffs of an island

Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney (Flat Iron Books, August 30th)

I am going to be fully and completely 100% honest with you people since we’re good friends. I read my fair share of thrillers, but… I don’t love most of them. I keep reading them because they’re fun, but I keep giving them low ratings on the ‘ole Goodreads. It’s not that I don’t love thrillers! I DO! I love them. And even when they’re bad, there’s something really enjoyable about reading them. I just… I guess I’m really picky when it comes to thrillers. It’s not something I’m proud of. In fact, it’s my great, deep shame. But I feel like I’m in a safe space right now, so I’m letting y’all know.

Why am I telling you one of my deepest, darkest reading confessions? Well, because Alice Feeney passes my incredibly (unnecessarily) rigorous thriller test. Her thrillers are fun and they’re good, and yeah, I’d recommend them to just about anyone. Her latest one Daisy Darker? Yeah. I recommend it. And it’s just about time for you to get your hands on it, so prepare your shelves.

Let’s set the scene: a dark, crumbling gothic house smack dab in the middle of a little island cut off from the rest of the world. Daisy Darker hasn’t spoken to her family much (or at all) over the past few years, but know the whole Darker clan is gathering at Nana’s house to celebrate her 80th birthday. A storm is raging outside and the hour grows late… and right at the stroke of midnight, Nana is found dead. An hour later, the next family member follows.

Sure there have been plenty of retellings and fresh takes of Agatha Christie’s classic novel And Then There Were None, but none is quite like this one. Alice Feeney is the reigning queen of surprises and twists, and this novel will not disappoint!

I think it’s a show that will reward people who are fans of the comic, but also people who’ve never read it.” Regarding the casting, Vaughan added, “We comic nerds are so specific in what we want out of our adaptations, and we’re never happy…and universally anyone who’s read Paper Girls the moment they see that trailer they’re like, ‘Oh, my God, they got it completely right.'” Paper Girls will premiere in full on Prime Video on Friday, July 29th.

Can’t Wait for This One!

delicious monsters book cover

Delicious Monsters by Liselle Sambury (Margaret K. McElderry Books, February 28th, 2023)

This is another book where, I have to say, the cover is doing some serious WORK. Will you look at this stunning thing? First of all, trees are scary as heck (don’t @ me). And people with tree limbs? It’s giving Titus Andronicus. And the creepy house in the background and the ominous reflection in the water? Okay, we know this is going to be some creepy haunted house stuff. YA horror/thrillers have been especially exiting over the past couple of years. So I am. Here. For. This.

Delicious Monsters is being called a psychological thriller that’s The Haunting of Hill House meets Sadie. Daisy sees dead people, so in navigating life in Ontario, she’s completely unsurprised by the amount of ghosts she sees walking the city. Her boyfriend breaking up with her? Now that is surprising. So when her mother inherits a secluded mansion, Daisy jumps at the chance for an escape to a quieter life. But the house—and what’s inside it—might be more than all of Daisy’s experiences with the supernatural have prepared her for.

Flash forward to ten years later. Brittney’s desperate to get away from her abusive mother, and she’s quite certain that the book her mother wrote about a “Miracle Mansion” is a total sham. So what does Brittney decide to do? She takes her popular web series Haunted on location to the mansion to find out what happened there ten years earlier and expose her mother’s lies.

My guess? This house is haunted as heck and through these dual storylines, we’re going to see both Daisy and Brittney encounter some truly terrifying things. But y’all, we gotta wait ’til February 2023 to find out! The suspense is killing me!

Words of Literary Wisdom

“Often the case with people who don’t read fiction. Hollow inside, monochrome, so they can switch gears no problem. They swallow something and forget about it as soon as it goes down their throat. Constitutionally incapable of empathy. These are the people who most need to read, but in most cases it’s already too late.”

Bullet Train by Kōtarō Isaka

What’s Up in the Book Community?

My iPhone is constantly telling me I spend too much time staring at my screen, which is honestly so rude. But this means I spend a lot of time scrolling around the online book community: BookTube, Bookstagram, BookTok, BookLinkedIn (JK. That’s not a thing… I don’t think). You get the idea. Don’t have the time, energy, or the will to do all of that yourself? No problem. I got you. In this weekly section of Book Radar, we’ll take a look at something cool, interesting, and/or newsy that’s going on in the book community.

With all the book banning going on across the country, I love seeing ways that communities are fighting back. So readers from the Austin, Texas area, listen up. This one’s for you.

Austin Public Library is standing against book bans with Banned Camp. Banned Camp is a series of free events hosted by the Austin Public Library in partnership with BookPeople. All summer, these events will focus on the books dealing with race, LGBTQ+ issues, and sexuality that are being taken off shelves across the country. Texas currently leads the country in book bans, so it’s especially great to see communities in Texas fighting back! If you want to participate, here’s a full list of upcoming events.

And if you’re not in Austin, Texas, some of the events are virtual, so check that out as well!

And Here’s A Cat Picture

calico cat on a black chair

It’s been a while since we checked in on my shy calico girl Cersei Anne Boleyn (C for short). I know I told you all she hasn’t been feeling well, but I think she’s starting to get better? She seems happy and healthy anyway, don’t you think? Too bad this poor little girl doesn’t know she’s about to take a plane ride across the country this Sunday.

And that’s all for today, friends! How wild that the next time you hear from me, I’ll be in my new home! I’m so excited for new adventures, and excited to share them with you. Have a wonderful weekend.

School District Given LGBTQ-Affirming Books, but Parents Objected

LGBTQ-affirming books donated to Solana Beach School District schools have been met with objections from parents. Over the past three years, Orange County native Keiko Feldman, co-founder of the non-profit Open Books, has helped donate over 15,000 LGBTQ-affirming children’s books to more than 1,000 public school libraries, mostly in California. Feldman says the idea is to show kids that it’s okay to be LGBTQ. But when Feldman dropped off books last year in Solana Beach — a North County district of 2,800 students in kindergarten through sixth grade — at a teacher’s request, not all parents were happy about it. Some parents and community members complained to the district, arguing that the books were inappropriate for elementary school libraries. Now the district has stopped the books from going into circulation due to the controversy.

Hong Kong Publishers Excluded from Book Fair

At least three booksellers say they were banned from Hong Kong’s annual book fair for selling books that were deemed politically sensitive.
