Silver Nitrate Book Cover

Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia (Del Ray, July 18)

What the heck? It’s June! Which means July is right around the corner. Which means… it’s almost time for the latest book from Silvia Moreno-Garcia and wow, what a time to be alive. This author keeps publishing hits after hits and I just keep reading them. If somehow you haven’t read one of her novels yet, I think SIlver Nitrate is a great place to start. So get ready!

Set in Mexico City in the 1990s, Silver Nitrate is a horror/thriller novel that focuses on Montserrat, a talented sound editor who nevertheless can’t seem to get into the inner circle of the film industry. Basically, it’s a total boy’s club, and the only one who takes notice of Montserrat at all is her best friend, a soap opera star named Tristán.

When Tristán discovers that his new neighbor is cult horror director Abel Urueta, Tristán sees an opportunity for both himself and Montserrat to jumpstart their careers. After Urueta failed to finish his last film, the director swears he’s been cursed for life. Now he wants Tristán and Montserrat to help him film the final scenes to lift the curse forever. But lifting a curse is never easy, and everyone involved in the film begins to feel a darkness surrounding them and the project.

What’s Up in the Book Community?

My iPhone is constantly telling me I spend too much time staring at my screen, which is honestly so rude. But this means I spend a lot of time scrolling around the online book community: BookTube, Bookstagram, BookTok, BookLinkedIn (JK. That’s not a thing…I don’t think). You get the idea. Don’t have the time, energy, or the will to do all of that yourself? No problem. I got you. In this weekly section of Book Radar, we’ll take a look at something cool, interesting, and/or newsy that’s going on in the book community.

It’s been a minute since we took a look at the book community, but with summer on the horizon, the world of books is poppin’.

Did you participate in Book It! as a kid? You know, with the personal pan pizzas and all that good stuff? Have you, like me, been chasing that high ever since? Well, check with your local library, because they might have a treat for you, adult reader.

For instance, at the Seattle Public Library, they’ve partnered with Seattle Arts & Lectures (SAL) to create a Summer Book Bingo card for adults. If you achieve bingo or blackout, you will be entered to win lots of fun prizes. Maybe not a personal pan pizza, but, like, other stuff! You can download a BINGO card, fill it out, and send it in by end of day on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2023. And if you’re looking for suggestions in each of the book BINGO categories, they’ve got suggestions for you as well.

I am so, so excited to be participating in this BINGO challenge this summer. Is your library doing anything similar? Would love to hear about it!

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

grumpy orange cat

Murray looks a little grumpy in this picture because he was trying to go to bed, and Ben pulled a pillow out from under him. But still, no matter what the reason, this mean mug is more adorable than it has any right to be. I hate to make light of my cat’s misery, but like…look at him.

And with that, I wish you a good rest of your week and a wonderful, restful weekend! Farewell!

learned by heart book cover

Learned by Heart by Emma Donoghue (Little, Brown and Company, August 29)

Emma Donoghue’s Room is a book I still can’t stop thinking about years later. And yes, I know she’s written several great books since then, but it still goes back to Room for me. Could Learned by Heart usurp Room and become my new favorite Emma Donoghue novel? With this premise, it’s very possible. Also, look at this cover! I have heart eyes.

Learned by Heart is based on a true story and was written after years of research and real words from Anne Lister’s (the “first modern lesbian“) secret journal. Eliza Raine was an heiress who was orphaned and sent to England from India when she was only 6 years old. At the age of 14 in the year 1805, Eliza is sent to Manor School for young ladies. There she meets Anne Lister, a brilliant tomboy who is always getting herself into trouble. This book is their love story, full of passion and heartbreak.

Learned by Heart isn’t out until the end of August, but with the way this year is going, that’s basically tomorrow. I can’t wait!

Words of Literary Wisdom

Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret by Judy Blume

What I’m Watching This Weekend

Well, The Little Mermaid is out this weekend, and just like every millennial who grew up wishing they were Ariel, I will be at the theater watching the new live action remake. Do I think it will be good? Look, probably not. But I do think Halle Bailey looks beautiful and sings like an angel. Hot take: the only Disney live action remake that’s been good so far is Aladdin. I’m ready for the hate mail, but I will die on this hill.

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

two cats looking outside

We’ve been having a bit of nice weather lately, and the cats are loving sitting by the screen door and checking out the tennis players in the park across the street. Yes, our cats are big tennis fans, it’s true. They probably know more about tennis than I do.

Okay…well. Hopefully the weekend gets here soon, right? I hope it’s a good one for you!

Prepare Your Shelves!

nightbloom book cover

Nightbloom by Peace Adzo Medie (Algonquin Books, June 13)

In June, Peace Adzo Medie, the author of the Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick His Only Wife, is back with a second novel. So it’s time to get excited and prepare your shelves.

Cousins Selasi and Akorfa grew up together in Ghana and were completely attached at the hip. They would do anything for each other and spent every moment together. Selasi was the loud, outspoken one, and Akorfa was the quiet and contemplative one. They balanced each other out and made each other better.

But then Selasi begins to change, becoming quiet and hostile and shutting her cousin out. And Akorfa gets accepted to an American university and wants to become a doctor one day. But leaving Ghana for America isn’t everything Akorfa dreamed it would be. And until Selasi and Akorfa reconcile and make sense of what happened between them — and the role Akorfa played in Selasi’s change— neither cousin will be able to move forward with their lives.

Nightbloom is a beautifully written celebration of the complexities of female friendships. It’s a stunning story that centers the experiences of African-born women living in America. And I would say it’s a must-read, so get ready to add this to your TBR this June!

what feasts at night book cover

What Feasts at Night by T. Kingfisher (Tor Nightfire, March 26, 2024)

I feel like I’ve been hyping up this sequel for quite some time, but now that we have a cover and a release date and all the details, it’s time to get into it. Let’s talk about this book, because it’s going to be a must-read in 2024. 2024? I know, we’re talking about 2024 already. It’s unsettling. But here we are.

What Feasts at Night sees the return of retired soldier Alex Easton (from T. Kingfisher’s What Moves the Dead). Miss Potter asks Easton to travel to Gallacia, but when they get there, they find the home completely empty. No one is there, the caretaker is dead, and the grounds are strangely silent. Gallacian folklore has the townspeople whispering of a breath-stealing being taking up residence in Easton’s home. But what is the truth behind what’s going on?

Kween book cover

Kween by Vichet Chum (Quill Tree Books, October 3)

I don’t know about you, but I love the energy of this cover. Maybe it’s because I love purple. Maybe it’s because this cover is super cute. Either way, I’m excited to read this one when it comes out in October, and after I tell you about it, I think you will be too.

Soma Kear is a queer Cambodian American teen whose slam poetry videos have gone viral. Soma’s verses are how she makes sense of the world and finds a connection to her true self. But with everything going on at home and her Ba’s deportation to Cambodia, is Soma really ready to put herself out there? And when Soma’s school decides to on a spoken word contest, will she be brave enough to share her truest self — her fears, her uncertainties — with the world?

Vichet Chum’s debut novel promises to be a celebration of Khmer identity, queerness, and “embracing the complicated histories that shape who we are and want to be.”

Words of Literary Wisdom

“After all, money was like bunnies – once you had a certain amount of hundreds in your wallet, they just kept multiplying. Either people respected you and gave you opportunities that led to more money, or you put it in the stock market, sat back and watched it give birth over and over again.”

— Happy & You Know It by Laura Hankin (I’m manifesting these words of literary wisdom right now)

I feel like this week we have to acknowledge the Taylor Swift memoir conspiracy. So let’s dive in.

So for the past week or so, Taylor Swift fans have been taking to social media to share their theories about an upcoming potential memoir and hints that the musician may (or may not) be dropping about this memoir’s release. In fact, people are so convinced that this unnamed memoir from an undisclosed celebrity is going to be a Taylor Swift memoir that the book has already pushed the mysterious book up the charts.

But Swifties? I’ve got bad news. It has been confirmed that the memoir is not, in fact, by Taylor Swift. So who is the mystery author? Now people are speculating that it might be BTS, but we’ll have to wait and see!

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

two cats on a wood floor waiting for their morning treats

Here’s a little peek into our daily routine. Every morning, the cats get fed and then they immediately go over to the treat drawer to await their treats. So yes, here they are awaiting their morning treats. They are terribly spoiled.

And that’s all for today, friends! I hope you have a wonderful weekend, and I’ll see you soon.

im not supposed to be in the dark book cover

I’m Not Supposed to be in the Dark by Riss M. Neilson (Henry Holt & Company, May 9)

Here’s another book you should get excited about right now, because it comes out tomorrow. This one comes from Riss M. Neilson, author of 2022’s Deep in Providence. It’s a ghost story. It’s a romance. It’s a story of friendship. You get the idea. It’s a must-read.

Seventeen-year-old Aria Cayetano used to see ghosts. But when she started drinking a special tea given to her by her grandfather, the visions go away. Then a decades old rosebush suddenly dies across the street, and Aria is certain something supernatural is going on. While Aria would love to look into what happened to the rosebush, the plant in question sits in the lawn of her friend-turned-enemy Derek Johnson. She’s not exactly sure what caused them to have a falling out all those years ago, but she knows he doesn’t want anything to do with her now.

Then out of nowhere Derek starts talking to her again. And while at first Aria thinks her friend has returned to her, she soon realizes what’s really happening. Derek has been possessed by a ghost, and if Aria doesn’t get the ghost out, Derek might die.

what kind of mother book cover

What Kind of Mother by Clay McLeod Chapman (Quirk Books, September 12)

Every Clay McLeod Chapman novel has felt like a new and exciting exploration into horror unlike anything done before. There’s something that feels almost dangerous about reading his novels because it’s hard to predict where the story will go. Which is why I am so, so, so excited about his upcoming Southern Gothic horror novel What Kind of Mother.

Madi Price left home as a teen mom. But now that she’s strapped for cash, she has reluctantly returned to her hometown of Brandywine, Virginia, with her 17-year-old daughter in tow. Madi scrapes by working as a palm reader at the local farmer’s market. Here’s where she reconnects with old high school flame Henry McCabe, whose infant son went missing five years ago. Everyone assumes Henry’s son is dead, but when Madi reads his palm, she sees haunting visions that suggest otherwise.

What I’m Watching This Weekend

Friends, has anyone seen Renfield? I know that it got sort of middling reviews, but now it’s available streaming, so it seems like a good, fun one to watch this weekend. It’s got a great cast, and I’m a sucker (pun intended) for anything Dracularelated. Speaking of movies, I also need to get to the theaters to see Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret ASAP. It looks so good!

BTW, horror fans…saw Evil Dead Rise last weekend and yeah, it was pretty great.

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

My little tuxedo boy Remy has been getting so cuddly as he gets older. And he loooves snuggling up on the bed. Just look at his little white paws. I love him.

Sorry, I had to gush about this cat for a little while. The whiskers! The tail!

And that is all, friends. I hope your week ends on a high note, and I’ll see you on Monday!

The Daydreams by Laura Hankin (Berkley, May 2)

Who didn’t love 2000s teen shows? I mean! The OC! Gossip Girl! I, for one, was all in. And now, believe it or not, we’re far enough removed from the 2000s that we can look back and have nostalgia for our television days of yore. And yes, we can even read fiction about it. Enter the latest from Laura Hankin, The Daydreams, which is giving us that 2000s nostalgia we didn’t even know we needed with a huge helping of drama. Best of all, it’s coming out this week, so prepare your shelves!

The Daydreams was the show everyone was talking about back in 2004. The series boasted a wholesome teen cast, great ratings, and romance that fueled all sorts of ships and fan fiction. But after the live season finale of season two went awry, all four of the main cast members went their separate ways.

Years have passed, and although the stars of the show have moved on with their lives, fans of the series are demanding a reunion special. Each cast member has their own reason for agreeing to do a reunion, and as the team bands back together, some of that original 2000s magic from The Daydreams actually starts to come back. But some of the show’s secrets begin to resurface as well. Will this reunion be the stars’ opportunity to end the series on a good note? Or will this be a bigger disaster than the live finale?

the liberators book cover

The Liberators by E.J. Koh (Tin House Books, November 7)

Poet and translator E.J. Koh released her memoir The Magical Language of Others back in 2020, but I, like many readers, still can’t stop thinking about it in 2023. Now Koh is releasing her debut novel, The Liberators, a literary novel spanning continents and four generations of two Korean families.

After their arranged marriage, Insuk and Sungho move from South Korea to San Jose, California. In a new country, Insuk feels grief over the loss of her home and everything she left behinds, and she enters into an affair that will change the course of two families’ lives over many generations. Koh’s novel weaves in real historical events, from the Gwangju Massacre to the 1988 Olympics, to tell the story of family legacies, loss, memory, love, and war.

The Liberators will be out from Tin House Books on November 7, and it’s sure to include some of the most beautiful prose you’ve read all year. Make sure to put this one on your TBR!

Words of Literary Wisdom

“Fire is immense and immeasurable; it will keep expanding, reproducing, until water or air stop it. If the Lord cherishes us, why are we so fragile and fire so grand? Pointless debate. We are the fire, and the fire is us. We were born with electricity in our hearts, the divine flame. When we die, we return to the elements. Ashes to fucking ashes.”

Scorched Grace by Margot Douaihy

What I’m Watching This Weekend

I’m finally catching up with some of those TV shows I know I should have been watching but just hadn’t gotten around to watching yet. At the top of my list are Yellowjackets and Swarm. Are you watching these too? Or have you watched them? I would love to hear your thoughts!

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

calico cat hiding

Sweet Cersei Anne continues to be a hermit. hiding in her little cat house. Her new trick, as you’ll see in this pic, is pushing the pillow halfway outside of her house so that it’s even harder for the other cats to get to her. Relatable, TBH.

Aaaand…that is all for today, friends! Have a great weekend.
