Get ready for the mega-est of megalists! There are SO many amazing books out today. I had the great fortune of reading several of them, and loving many of them. CJ’s never lived up to her mom’s ambition, and she’s perfectly happy just helping her aunt, Hannah, at their family’s flower shop. She doesn’t buy into Hannah’s ideas about flowers and their hidden meanings, but when it comes to floral arrangement, CJ discovers a skill she can be proud of. Then her mom decides to sell the shop—to the family who swindled CJ’s grandparents when Japanese Americans were sent to internment camps during WWII. Soon a rift threatens to splinter CJ’s family, friends, and their entire community; and for the first time, CJ has found something she wants to fight for.

The First Trailer for THE KITCHEN Starring McCarthy, Haddish, and Moss and More Book Radar!

Hello, book lovers! As I am writing this, it is Friday and I am typing as fast as I can, so I can get back to watching Good Omens. I am only two episodes in, but so far, it’s great. I hope it lasts. The Deadwood movie also premieres today, and while I don’t have high hopes for it, I am super excited to see it anyway. (I swear I still read books sometimes too.) It was a slow news week, probably because all of publishing was at Book Expo, but I still have a couple cool things to share. Enjoy the rest of your week and remember to be excellent to each other! I’ll see you again on Thursday. – xoxo, Liberty

Loved, loved, loved:

all this could be yoursAll This Could Be Yours by Jami Attenberg (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, October 22)

I can’t remember if I already told you how much I loved this book, so I’m going to do it again. It’s about members of a family who have been lorded over by the abusive narcissist patriarch their whole lives. When he suffers a heart attack, they reflect on his past behavior, and contemplate forgiveness. I LOOOOOVED it. And the ending, holy cats! It was the first time I fist-pumped the air and said “YESSSSSS” while reading an ending. I looked like Judd Nelson in The Breakfast Club.

Emily Dawson travels to Barbados in 1854 to claim an unexpected inheritance from her grandfather – Peverills, a sugar plantation in Barbados that her grandfather never told anyone he owned. Emily discovers that Peverills is a burned out shell, destroyed in 1816, when an uprising of enslaved people sent the island up in flames. Why would her grandfather leave her a property in ruins? Why are the neighboring plantation owners so eager to acquire Peverillsw? The answers lie in the past–a tangled history of deception, greed, clandestine love, betrayal, and a bold bid for freedom.

Polly Spencer is single and turning thirty, but seriously, she’s fine. Even if she’s still stuck at Posh! magazine writing about royal babies and the chances of finding a plus one to her best friend’s summer wedding are looking worryingly slim. But it’s a new year, and Polly’s determined that over the next 365 days she’ll remember to shave her legs, drink less wine, and get her s**t together. Her latest piece is on the infamous Jasper, Marquess of Milton, undoubtedly neither a plus one nor ‘the one.’ She’s heard the stories—there’s no way she’ll succumb to his charms…

the flatshareThe Flatshare: A Novel by Beth O’Leary

In an effort to save money, Tiffany stays in it at night, and Leon during the day. As the two communicate through a series of notes, they begin to develop a real affinity for one another. Could it translate over IRL? (Writing this blurb is making me want to go watch Ladyhawke.)

She’s trying to help the newly emancipated community, but when criminals destroy her school, and threaten her, she flees – and ends up running into Captain Drake LeVeq. Hooray, It’s Time for New Books!

Hello and welcome to another Tuesday edition of “Holy cats, there are so many books in the world!” I know we’re all trying to read as many of them as we can. (Go, us!) I have a few of today’s amazing new releases to tell you about. And you can hear about more awesome reads on this week’s episode of the All the Books! María Cristina and I talked about The Confessions of Frannie Langton, Vessel, Star-Crossed, and more great books.

Sponsored by Flatiron Books

From the award-winning author of If I Was Your Girl, Meredith Russo, comes a heart-wrenching and universal story of identity, first love, and fate. Six years of birthdays reveal Eric and Morgan’s destiny as they come together, drift apart, fall in love, and discover who they’re meant to be—and if they’re meant to be together.

biloxiBiloxi: A Novel by Mary Miller

I don’t know that there are many authors who could have pulled this book off. It’s about 63-year-old Louis McDonald, Jr. His father has died, his wife of 37 years has left him, he’s retired, and he’s a bit problematic. But the way Miller writes him, I still found myself caring for this book about a flawed man, and the dog he adopts, because it’s incredibly compelling. I may not love Louis, but I loved this book. (Also, do you think this is the first book cover to feature baloney?)

Backlist bump: The Last Days of California by Mary Miller

Set in Brooklyn in 1998, this is about the power of music and how it fills the spaces in grief. Steph was a talented rapper, until he was murdered. Wanting to keep him from being forgotten, his best friends Quadir and Jarrell and Steph’s younger sister Jasmine release his songs under a new name: The Architect. But when Steph’s music catches on, and people are wanting to know more and hear more from the architect, their secret threatens to come apart, forcing them to confront the truth of Steph’s death.

Backlist bump: Monday’s Not Coming by Tiffany D Jackson

amelia westlakeAmelia Westlake Was Never Here by Erin Gough

This is a delightful, queer romantic comedy about two girls who hate one another – but not as much as they hate inequality. Harriet Price and Will Everhart are about as different as two students can be, but when both girls are fed up with the harassment and sexism at their school, they join together to create Amelia Westlake, an imaginary student who exposes the wrongs they cannot. But how long can they keep the secret of Amelia – and how long before they admit they’re falling in love?

A Hip-Hop ROMEO & JULIET from Queen Latifah and Will Smith and More Book Radar!

I’ll see you again on Thursday. – xoxo, Liberty

“Book Radar” is sponsored by Gather the Fortunes by Bryan Camp, published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

Camp returns to his otherworldly New Orleans for a new novel that evokes the magic, mystery, and mythology of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods with a female protagonist that calls to mind the power and personality of Chuck Wendig’s Miriam Black (Blackbirds). Is it one of the storm gods that’s descended on the city? The death god who’s locked the Gates of the Underworld?

Or the manipulative sorcerer who also cheated Death? When she finds the schemer, there’s going to be hell to pay, because there are scarier things than death in the Crescent City. Renaissance Raines is one of them.

will my cat eat my eyeballsWill My Cat Eat My Eyeballs?: Big Questions from Tiny Mortals About Death by Caitlin Doughty (W. W. Norton & Company, September 10)

This was every bit as wonderful as I knew it would be! Doughty takes real questions she has been asked by kids – which she prefers, as adults aren’t as usually as direct when talking about death – and gives funny, fascinating, and completely honest answers. While the questions have been asked by children, the book is not exactly for children. Maybe for older kids, but the graphic descriptions and frankness definitely make this more for adults, something that Doughty warns in the preface. Whoever it is for, she has once again written an informative and conscientious book about mortality. It’s a book most everyone can learn from.

The sequel to the instant New York Times bestseller Furyborn! Rielle Dardenne has been anointed Sun Queen, but her trials are far from over. The Gate keeping the angels at bay is falling. To repair it, Rielle must collect the seven hidden castings of the saints. Centuries later, Eliana Ferracora grapples with her new reality: She is the Sun Queen, humanity’s long-awaited savior. But fear of corruption—fear of becoming another Rielle—keeps Eliana’s power dangerous and unpredictable. At Book Riot, I work on the New Books! email, the All the Books! podcast about new releases, and the Book Riot Insiders New Release Index. I am very fortunate to get to read a lot of upcoming titles, and learn about a lot of upcoming titles, and I’m delighted to share a couple with you each week so you can add them to your TBR! (It will now be books I loved on Mondays and books I’m excited to read on Thursdays. YAY, BOOKS!)

Loved, loved, loved:

how not to die aloneHow Not to Die Alone by Richard Roper (G.P. Putnam’s Sons, May 28)

Andrew works for the town council, searching the belongings of people who have died alone to find any relatives. And every night, after work, he goes home to his lovely wife and two kids. Or at least, his coworkers think he does. In actuality, Andrew lives alone, much like the people he sees pass away. Then he meets Peggy, a new coworker, and he starts to fall for her. But in order to do that, he’ll have to reveal the truth about his situation, and who wants to start a relationship off with a liar? This is a delightful, life-affirming novel about death that will tickle your funny bone and tax your tear ducts.

What I’m reading this week:
