This Newsletter Was Written by a Real Person

And it always will be, if I have anything to say about it! What’s the fun in letting a machine write about comics when I can do it myself?

Riot Recommendations

Today’s Riot Rec theme is: AI! It’s been in the news a lot lately, mostly for bad reasons. Let’s take a look at how AI is portrayed in the graphic realm.

Alex + Ada cover

Alex + Ada by Jonathan Luna and Sarah Vaughn

The X5 is the most advanced android ever created. Alex doesn’t particularly want one, but after acquiring Ada, he decides to do something different: allow her to acquire sentience and become an independent being. With that one fateful decision, both their lives will change forever.

Pixels of You cover

Pixels of You by Ananth Hirsch, Yuko Ota, and J.R. Doyle

Indira and Fawn both want to be photographers. They also aren’t what they seem to be: Indira is a human enhanced by technology, Fawn is an AI — and they don’t get along at all. But with their photography internship in jeopardy, the two will have to learn to work together. When they do, who knows how far their relationship will take them?

Machines are great for some things — like sending newsletters right to your email, for instance — but personally, I still like getting hard copies of my comics. They’re more fun to read.

However you read your comics, I’ll have more of them for you next week!

For a more comprehensive list of new releases, check out our New Books newsletter!

Riot Recommendations

Today’s Riot Rec theme is: World War II. Seventy-nine years after D-Day and we still haven’t run out of stories to tell about the Second World War…stories like those featured in these comics, for instance.

Belonging cover

Belonging: A German Reckons with History and Home by Nora Krug

While Krug was growing up in Germany, her grandparents never talked about World War II. As she gets older, Krug begins to wonder what role her family played in the 20th century’s most destructive conflict — and she starts digging in search of truths she may not like.

We Hereby Refuse cover

We Hereby Refuse: Japanese American Resistance to Wartime Incarceration by Frank Abe, Tamiko Nimure, Ross Ishikawa, and Matt Sasaki

You’ve probably heard of how the U.S. unjustly incarcerated Japanese Americans in the name of “security.” You might also know about how some Japanese Americans bravely served in the 442nd Infantry. But do you know about the people who fought back against the injustices they faced, even refusing to serve a country that did not view them as human beings? This comic tells their incredible stories.

If you’re in the Southern Hemisphere, happy winter! I sure wish I was you right now: I can’t stand the heat and the bugs, to be honest!

A Safe and Happy Pride Month to You

Pride Month will probably look different for a lot of us this year, given the worsening political climate in America, Russia, Uganda, and other countries. But that’s why we need Pride Month more than ever: to give us a chance to celebrate who we are, remember where we have come from, and look forward to the day when things are even better.

New Releases

Star Trek The Mirror War cover

Star Trek: The Mirror War by Scott Tipton, David Tipton, and Gavin Smith

In a dark and twisted version of the familiar, optimistic Star Trek universe, the Empire — the mirror version of the Federation — is in trouble. They have been all but conquered by the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance, but they still have an ace up their sleeve: Captain Picard, who leads a fleet of starships to protect what remains of the once-proud Empire.

Gatsby cover

Gatsby by Jeremy Holt and Felipe Cunha

Who wants a retelling of The Great Gatsby about a Singaporean student whose wealthy cousin drags him into all of the worst things America has to offer, from illegal drugs to murder? The real question is, who wouldn’t want all that? And this comic, the latest in the adaptation flood unleashed when Fitzgerald’s novel hit the public domain, will give it to you in spades.

For a more comprehensive list of new releases, check out our New Books newsletter!

Riot Recommendations

Today’s Riot Rec theme is: identity! We all struggle with our identity in different ways. These comics show that it is perfectly normal to spend a long time, even years, asking the tough questions to figure out who you are — and who you want to be.

Come Home, Indio cover

Come Home, Indio by Jim Terry

Terry has always felt caught between two worlds: that of his Indigenous family, and that of his non-native classmates. Eventually, unable to deal with it any longer, he starts drinking. It would take a long time — and the discovery of a new life purpose at the Standing Rock protests — for Terry to find his way in the world.

Fine A Comic About Gender cover

Fine: A Comic About Gender by Rhea Ewing

While wrestling with their own gender identity, Ewing started to wonder: is anyone really happy with their gender? Does anyone even know what “gender” means? This comic documents the thoughtful, fascinating, sometimes surprising responses Ewing received from the many people they posed these questions to.

Whoever you are and whatever you’re facing, remember that you’re pretty great just as you are. Maybe it doesn’t always feel like it, but it’s still true. And don’t you forget it!

Riot Recommendations

Today’s Riot Rec theme is: mental health! Let’s close out Mental Health Awareness month with some comics about acknowledging and living with mental illness.

Everything is OK cover

Everything is OK by Debbie Tung

Riot Recommendations

Today’s Riot Rec theme is: summer camp in the ’90s! I don’t know what’s so ’90s about summer camp, but there are at least two comics set in that decade and that setting, so let’s dig in.

Flamer cover

Flamer by Mike Curato

Aiden is definitely not gay. So what if he can’t stop thinking about that cute guy Elias? Being gay is definitely not okay when you’re a teenage boy in 1995, and it’s the last thing Aiden wants to be. But as his time at summer camp draws to a close, he will be forced to find peace with who he really is, no matter how uncomfortable the truth makes him.

Camp Spirit cover

Camp Spirit by Axelle Lenoir

It’s 1994, and Elodie has one summer left before going to college. The last thing she wants to do is spend her time as a camp counselor, but her mother insists. Now, Elodie will have to wrestle (perhaps literally) with a bunch of children, not to mention her friendship with fellow counselor Catherine and a forest spirit that may pose a danger to the entire camp.

I never actually went to summer camp. Did you? Was it fun? In any case, I hope you have even more fun adventures this summer!

The Good Old Days…

…probably weren’t as good as we remember, to be honest. Even some of the comics we read once upon a time might not be all that great upon rereading! On the other hand, some comics are so good or so memorable that we can continue to enjoy them all of our lives. Maybe you’ll find one like that below!

Book Riot has a new podcast for you to check out if you’re looking for more bookish content in your life. First Edition will include interviews, lists, rankings, retrospectives, recommendations, and much more, featuring people who know and love books. Riot Recommendations

Today’s Riot Rec theme is: historical fiction! Why? Because I like it, that’s why.

Work for a Million cover

Work for a Million by Amanda Deibert, Eve Zaremba, and Selena Goulding

Based on the prose novel, this comic stars Helen, a private eye. Working in the 1970s, she takes on a blackmail case for a popular female singer. But what happens when Helen does the one thing she’s not supposed to and falls in love with her client just as things get especially dangerous?

Superman Smashes the Klan cover

Superman Smashes the Klan by Gene Luen Yang and Gurihiru

Honestly one of my all-time faves. Set in the 1950s, it tells the story of two fish out of water: Roberta, a Chinese American girl dealing with racism and a pesky older brother, and Superman, who worries that he is too alien to fit in here on Earth. Both must learn to be themselves if they are to succeed in “smashing the Klan!”

Boy, today’s comics mostly turned out to be pretty dark, huh? I didn’t plan it that way, but I’ll try to find some lighter material for next week, just to balance things out!
