At a Georgia Tech alumni event, poetry professor Karen Head spoke with former President and COO of Waffle House, Bert Thornton, about the lack of applications from rural students even though admission to valedictorians or salutatorians in the state is guaranteed. Now Karen Head, thanks to the Waffle House Foundation, is Waffle House Poet Laureate and got “a small grant to cover travel to 12 schools and also the college tuition of a poetry competition winner.

Jailed Turkish Author Longlisted For The Baillie Gifford Prize

Ahmet Altan–who was imprisoned in 2016 and in 2018 received a life sentence for attempting to overthrow the government with “subliminal messages in favour of a coup”–wrote I Will Never See The World Again, which was put together by his lawyer from a series of passed notes. The prison memoir is now longlisted for the £50,000 Baillie Gifford prize for non-fiction.
