Book Riot Recommends

I’m a Contributing Editor at Book Riot, I write the Today in Books newsletter, and I’m a Bibliologist for Book Riot’s Tailored Book Recommendations subscription service. I also have a PhD in English, so I’m basically a doctor of books. Books are my life, in other words, so in this section of the newsletter, let me share with you some upcoming books I’m super excited about. And I think you will be too!

Favorite Books of 2022 (So Far)

book cover for sundial

So I’ve read a fair amount of books so far this year. Not as many as I was hoping I’d get to at this point in the year. But if you’ve been around for a while, then you know some personal life stuff has come up that got in the way. So it goes for everyone. Anyway, for the 2022 books I’ve read so far this year, here are my faves:

Sundial by Catriona Ward

Just Like Home by Sarah Gailey

Wahala by Nikki May

Queerly Beloved by Susie Dumond

Cold by Mariko Tamaki

I’ve written about all five of these books at some point in the newsletter. But if you haven’t picked up these five books yet, these are the ones I’d recommend you read. What’s your favorite book of 2022 so far? Let me know!

Books I’m Most Looking Forward to in the 2nd Half of 2022

the weight of blood book cover

I’ve been really, really vocal about how excited I am for The Weight of Blood, the latest from Tiffany D. Jackson. But in case you missed it, this is hands down the book I’m most excited about reading in 2022, and it’s coming out in September from Harper Collins.

Also coming out in September is another YA horror novel I can’t wait to get my hands on. And that’s The Getaway by Lamar Giles.

Other books that are topping my most anticipated list for the remainder of 2022:

What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher (July 12)

The Babysitter Lives by Stephen Graham Jones (August 9)

What’s Up in the Book Community?

My iPhone is constantly telling me I spend too much time staring at my screen, which is honestly so rude. But this means I spend a lot of time scrolling around the online book community: BookTube, Bookstagram, BookTok, BookLinkedIn (JK. That’s not a thing… I don’t think). You get the idea. Don’t have the time, energy, or the will to do all of that yourself? No problem. I got you. In this weekly section of Book Radar, we’ll take a look at something cool, interesting, and/or newsy that’s going on in the book community.

Speaking of middle-of-the-year wrap-ups, BookTube is full of them right now. A lot of BookTubers are doing the “Mid Year Book Freakout Tag.” Here are some of my faves:

I’m sure that there will be even more released as the month goes on, and I’ll be sure to pop them in here next week. But these should keep you entertained for now.

And Here’s A Cat Picture

black cat in a window

Since we’re looking back at 2022 so far while also looking forward to what 2022 will bring us in the second half of the year, I thought this picture was appropriate.

Here is Remy looking outside the window into the sun but also looking back at me to make sure I’m paying attention. It’s a metaphor. For 2022. Right?

Anyway, that is all I’ve got for you today! I hope you’re having a wonderful 2022 so far, and let’s finish this year out stronger than we started! Or, you know, just do you.

Netflix’s THE CHOSEN ONE Halts Filming After Crash Kills Two Actors: Today in Books

Ukraine Restricts Russian Books and Music in Latest Step of “Derussification”

Ukraine’s parliament has voted through two laws that will place severe restrictions on Russian books and music in an effort to break remaining cultural ties between Russia and Ukraine. One law will forbid the printing of books by Russian citizens, and it will ban the commercial import of books printed in Russia, Belarus, and occupied Ukrainian territory. The new laws will need to be signed by president Volodymyr Zelenskiy to take effect, but there is no indication that Zelenskiy opposes the laws, which both received broad support from across the chamber on Sunday.

Netflix’s The Chosen One Halts Filming After Crash Kills Two Actors

Redrum has temporarily paused production on the Netflix series The Chosen One, following a van crash that killed actors Raymundo Garduño Cruz and Juan Francisco González Aguilar and left six other cast or crew members injured. Local media reported that the crash occurred on June 16th and that the van flipped over near Mulege on the Baja California Sur peninsula. The crew had been working in the nearby Santa Rosalia area at the time. The series is based on the comic book series The Chosen One by Mark Millar and Peter Gross. “We are investigating the circumstances with local production,” SAG-AFTRA, the union representing film, television and radio workers, said in a statement. “On set safety is always our top priority. We will continue to take all necessary steps to ensure that our members and others are safe in their workplace.”

Publishers Defend Sensitivity Readers as Vital Tool Following Author Criticism

UK children’s publishers are defending the use of sensitivity readers following criticism about their supposed interference in the creative process. Bloomsbury, Bonnier and Quarto all told The Bookseller that they think sensitivity readers are an important part of “forward-thinking publishing” and emphasized that authors are not being forced to make changes they don’t want to make. Helen Wicks, managing editor for children’s trade at Bonnier, said, “We have used [sensitivity readers] for many years, picking our partners very carefully and positioning them as peer reviews. Importantly, we believe our teams have both the knowledge and skill required to work with our authors and advisers to bring the best possible stories to the widest possible audience.” Publishers emphasizes that sensitivity readers play a consultative role in the editing process, and that authors are free to accept or reject their suggestions.

In a statement posted on the Upswell website Friday, White said while her “impulse is always to stand by my author,” she was “affronted” when John Hughes wrote an article for The Guardian defending his work, claiming, “I wanted the appropriated passages to be seen and recognised as in a collage.” The Dogs has also been withdrawn from the longlist of Australia’s most prestigious literary prize, the Miles Franklin.

Prepare Your Shelves!

just like home book cover

Just Like Home by Sarah Gailey (Tor Books, July 19)

There are authors who can do one genre really, really well. And then there are authors like Sarah Gailey who seem to just nail whatever genre they decide to tackle. Gailey has written fantasy, mystery, western, sci-fi… and now Just Like Home is their entry into the world of horror. And if you’re wondering how horror this book is… it is legitimately scary. And bizarre. But isn’t the best horror fiction also super weird?

When Vera was a child, her father was arrested for being a serial killer and hiding the dead bodies in their house. Years have passed, and Vera hasn’t been back to her childhood home since she became estranged from her mother. But when her sick mother asks her to return, Vera obeys, despite the hard feelings, difficult memories, and even the fact that now Vera’s mother is renting out the home to true crime fanatics who want to be closer to the action. Still, something draws Vera back to the house. And when she starts to discover notes around the house that were written in her father’s handwriting, she wonders if the house is trying to send her a message.

I mentioned in the beginning of the year that Just Like Home was one of my most-anticipated books of the year, and this one definitely does not disappoint. So horror fans, prepare your shelves ASAP, because this one is coming at you on July 19th. You won’t be able to stop thinking about it. Mostly you’ll be asking yourself, “what the heck did I just read?” In a good way!

Can’t Wait for This One!

Don’t Fear the Reaper by Stephen Graham Jones (Gallery/Saga Press, February 7 2023)

Well, friends, I have been hyping this book ever since it was first announced last October, but since its release date was pushed back from fall 2022 to February 2023, I wanted to wait a little while to give you all a full write up explaining why exactly this one is at the top of my must-read list. February is still months and months and months away, but I am ready to talk to y’all about this book right now.

Don’t Fear the Reaper is the sequel to Stephen Graham Jones’ 2021 novel My Heart is a Chainsaw. My Heart is a Chainsaw was one of my most anticipated books of that year, and it did not disappoint. Even if slashers aren’t normally your thing, you should give this one a try. Stephen Graham Jones’ writing is always smart and intense and, yes, scary. But what made My Heart is a Chainsaw really stand out for me was the voice of the protagonist, Jade, who was endearing and vulnerable and hilarious and, yes, sometimes even annoying. But that just added more authenticity to her teen voice.

In Don’t Fear the Reaper, Jade is back. This book is set four years after the events of the first novel, so I’m curious to see how she has changed and grown since her senior year of high school. Jade is returning back to her rural lake town of Proofrock. On that very same day, convicted Indigenous serial killer Dark Mill South escapes from his prison transfer due to a blizzard. Dark Mill South is coming to Proofrock for his own reasons, to complete his revenge killings for the thirty-eight Dakota men who were hanged in 1862.

Apparently, this book is the second novel in The Lake Witch Trilogy. And you know what that means. We’re going to have another book in this series to look forward to very, very soon. Get ready for me to start getting excited about that one as soon as I finish this one!

Don’t forget you can get three free audiobooks at Audiobooks.com with a free trial!

Words of Literary Wisdom

“The thing about losing someone is that it doesn’t happen just once. It happens every time you do something great you wish they could see, every time you’re stuck and you need advice. Every time you fail. It erodes your sense of normal, and what grows back is decidedly not normal, and yet you still have to figure out how to trudge forward.”

The Ex Talk by Rachel Lynn Solomon

What’s Up in the Book Community?

My iPhone is constantly telling me I spend too much time staring at my screen, which is honestly so rude. But this means I spend a lot of time scrolling around the online book community: BookTube, Bookstagram, BookTok, BookLinkedIn (JK. That’s not a thing… I don’t think). You get the idea. Don’t have the time, energy, or the will to do all of that yourself? No problem. I got you. In this weekly section of Book Radar, we’ll take a look at something cool, interesting, and/or newsy that’s going on in the book community.

Of course, you know I had to acknowledge the Internet backlash against James Patterson and his comments about how hard it is to be a white person.

If you’ve somehow missed this, here’s a rundown of what James Patterson said last weekend. Of course, there was an immediate response from the book community on Twitter. Needless to say, Patterson’s comments did not go over well. And yes, the author has since apologized for the remarks, but I’m not sure you can put that racist genie back in the bottle, Jimmy. My heart does go out to the struggle that millionaire white men go through every day.

What I’m Watching This Weekend

Well, I haven’t yet watched the new season of Stranger Things. Why? Because Ben and I are rewatching the first three seasons before we dive into Season 4. So no spoilers! I’ve been trying to avoid all Stranger Things talk. After all, we’re still on our Season 1 rewatch right now, so give us time!

JUSTICE FOR BARB!

And Here’s A Cat Picture

tuxedo cat and orange cat on a cat tree

So since I’ve been told by multiple people that this photo should be Murray and Remy’s album cover, I have to ask. What’s the name of their band? What kind of music is it? And what’s the name of this album? Let me know.

If you’re wondering about my sweet little Cersei, she’s still on the mend. Her ankle is doing better, but the medicine is making her feel sick, so she’s not really wanting to eat now. Anyway, hopefully I’ll have better news to report next time.

For now, I hope you have a great weekend, and I’ll talk to you next week!
