Marra escaped the traditional fate of princesses—to be married away for the sake of an uncaring throne. Her sister wasn’t so fortunate. And after years of silence, Marra is done watching her suffer at the hands of a powerful and abusive prince. Seeking help for her rescue mission, Marra is offered the tools she needs, but only if she can complete three seemingly impossible tasks: build a dog of bones, sew a cloak of nettles, capture moonlight in a jar. But, as is the way in tales of princes and witches, doing the impossible is only the beginning.
Hello friends and Happy Valentines Day!
I don’t know if it’s become clear yet, but I love pretty much all holidays, and Valentine’s Day is no different. How am I celebrating today? Honestly, I’m going to the dentist. Very romantic right? I hope you’ve got something fun planned for the holiday if that’s what you’re into. And if not, well, I hope you find joy today anyway. And if you don’t find joy today, that’s okay too because toxic positivity is the worst.
Let’s talk books, maybe?

Book Riot Recommends
I’m a Contributing Editor at Book Riot, I write the Today in Books newsletter, and I’m a Bibliologist for Book Riot’s Tailored Book Recommendations subscription service. I also have a PhD in English, so I’m basically a doctor of books. Books are my life, in other words, so in this section of the newsletter, let me share with you some upcoming books I’m super excited about. And I think you will be too!
Prepare Your Shelves!
Sundial by Catriona Ward (Tor Nightfire, March 1)
I’ve only mentioned it 100 times, but in case you’re new here, Catriona Ward’s The Last House on Needless Street was my favorite book of 2021. As soon as I finished it, I knocked Sundial up to the very top of my to-read list for 2022. Now that the release date for this one is almost here, I’m happy to report that Sundial does not disappoint, and I’m excited for everyone to read it.
In this psychological horror novel, we follow Rob, who escaped her childhood home Sundial in search of a normal life. Now she has a husband, two kids, and a house in the suburbs, but the fears of what she’s left behind remain. And in her oldest daughter Callie, who collects bones and talks to imaginary friends, Rob sees echos of her past.
Sundial is a chilling horror novel that will play tricks with your mind, but it’s also a heart-wrenching family drama centered around one of the most dysfunctional families you’ve ever read about. Aside from that, much like The Last House on Needless Street, it’s best to go into Sundial knowing as little as possible. The story will surprise you, it will unsettle you, and it will be one you won’t soon forget.

Monday Memes
Okay, this isn’t really a book meme, but for those of you who are here for Valentine’s Day and also love horror (my people!): these valentines are perfect for you. I especially love the Midsommar one.
And here’s one that should please everybody. Does this sound like an ideal vacation or what?
Other Things That Make Me Happy
Today is the day of love, so how about checking out some good romantic books and movies? Paste Magazine put together this list of the Best Romantic Comedies of All Time. Do you agree with their picks?
More about the books? Here are 8 new romance novels you’ll fall in love with in 2022. Personally, I’m especially excited about One Night On the Island by Josie Silver and You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty by Akwaeke Emezi.
And Here’s A Cat Picture!
So my husband left his exercise mat out, and the cats decided it was a toy. Here we have Murray hiding under the mat and Phantom attacking his tail. When they get like this I usually call them the Bad Boys Club. What we’re witnessing is a Bad Boys Club meeting.
And if you’re wondering about all of those board games, well, my husband runs a board game shop, so if you’re ever looking for board game recommendations, I’ve got you covered there as well!
That’s all for now. Have a happy Valentine’s Day (and beyond)!
