Her Grace is a fictional creation by a reclusive real-life writer, and they have now written a memoir. They talk about how speaking through Duchess Goldblatt and forming a large online community of friends has helped them get through some tough times. I can’t wait to check it out!

Excited to read:

the holdoutThe Holdout: A Novel by Graham Moore (Random House, February 18, 2020)

Yes, Moore won an Oscar for writing the screenplay for The Imitation Game, and gave that beautiful tearjerker of a speech. But before that, he wrote The Sherlockian, which is a REALLY fun book! It’s partly about Arthur Conan Doyle and Bram Stoker investigating a murder in the early 1900s, and the mysterious death of a Sherlock fan in present day. And Moore also wrote The Last Days of Night, a mystery surrounding a lawsuit brought by Thomas Edison against George Westinghouse. So you know I am super pumped to read this new mystery about a woman suspected of killing a fellow juror a decade after the trial they attended ended with an acquittal.

The rep at the trade show table told me that her blood felt fizzy while she read these stories. In a good way. I’M SOLD. I mean, I was already sold, but yay fizzy blood! Loved, loved, loved:

the returnThe Return by Rachel Harrison (Berkley, March 24, 2020)

So many people told me this was amazing, and brilliant, and creepy, and THEY WERE RIGHT. It’s about four best friends from college, and what happens when one disappears for two years, then shows up again with no memory of what happened. First of all, I really dig that she went missing in Maine, because Maine can be spooky for sure! (Why do you think Stephen King is the way he is?!) And I love the dynamics between the friends, and what a bitch it is sometimes when someone knows you so well. And also how Harrison has seemingly made even interior design seem threatening. I loved it.

At Book Riot, I work on the New Books! email, the All the Books! podcast about new releases, and the Book Riot Insiders New Release Index. I am very fortunate to get to read a lot of upcoming titles, and learn about a lot of upcoming titles, and I’m delighted to share a couple with you each week so you can add them to your TBR! Excited to read:

sharks in the time of saviorsSharks in the Time of Saviors by Kawai Strong Washburn (MCD/FSG, March 31, 2020)

Yes, yes, this novel had me at “shark.” I LOVE THEM. But it also sounds really good! It starts in 1995, when seven-year-old Nainoa Flores falls over the side of a boat into shark-infested waters. But instead of being eaten, the shark brings the boy back to his family on the deck. I mean, how awesome is that beginning??? I can’t wait to read it!

What I’m reading this week.

the returnThe Return by Rachel Harrison

Chilling Effect: A Novel by Valerie Valdes

The Good Luck Girls by Charlotte Nicole Davis

The Remaking: A Novel by Clay Chapman

In the Dream House: A Memoir by Carmen Maria Machado

And this is funny.

I don’t always make puns, but when I do, they’re literary/really bad.
