This collaboration includes a series of initiatives, such as programming, online events, and educator resources for guided student reading, which are all set to roll out in 2022. The partnership stemmed from previous collaborations between Penguin Random House Education has done with #DisruptText, a crowdsourced, grassroots organization orchestrated by and aimed at teachers. The Washington Post Announces the Best Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Horror of 2021

As the best-of lists start to stack up, here’s one from The Washington Post that’s perfect for fans of sci-fi fiction, fantasy, and horror. Silvia Moreno-Garcia and Lavie Tidhar have picked out their favorite sci-fi, fantasy, and horror of the year, featuring some bestselling titles and some that may have fallen under the radar. Some highlights from the list? Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro, Goddess of Filth by V. Castro, and many more.

Tolkien Estate Blocks JRR Token Cryptocurrency

JRR Token, a Lord of the Rings-themed cryptocurrency, with the tagline “The One Token That Rules Them All,” has been blocked by the JRR Tolkien estate. The cryptocurrency launched in August with a video endorsement from Billy Boyd, who played Pippin in the films. The Tolkien Estate immediately took action via the World Intellectual Property Organization’s arbitration procedure. The estate argued that JRR Token infringed the Tolkien Estate’s trademark rights to JRR Tolkien’s name. Furthermore, the estate claimed that the domain name was “specifically designed to mislead internet users into believing that it and the website to which it resolves have some legitimate commercial connection” with Tolkien. The Tolkien estate has now recovered the domain name JRRToken.com, and the developer is no longer operating under that name.

Romance Lover’s Gift Recommendations

Welcome to the Kissing Books newsletter. I hope your spirit is doing well today. I’m P.N. Hinton, your companion through the world of romance. Whether this is your first time or you’re a regular I’m glad to have y’all here.

It’s been a whole week since we last spoke! If you observed Thanksgiving this year, I hope that it was a good time for you and that it was a charge rather than a drain. Mine was fairly uneventful but, all things considered, it was exactly what I needed. It was my one day off from work, so I just stayed at home, read A Match Made for Thanksgiving, and just enjoyed the quiet. As per the norm, I allowed myself to start watching holiday movies last Friday. I will start reading more holiday novels soon as well, although I did get a jump on a few this year already.

One thing I haven’t really done yet is start shopping. I know I can hear the collective groans from everyone. But hear me out! I’m very much one of those people who, once I buy someone a gift, I want to give it to them right away. I love seeing their reaction when they open it and that is one of the biggest draws for me. So, I tend to wait until the last moment to get it so as to avoid being tempted.

That said, I know not everyone is like this and some of y’all may already be done. However, if you’re a gift-buying procrastinator like yours truly, then you may just now be getting to your round of shopping. If so, here are just a few recommendations for the romance lovers in our life. Or, if you need to strongly nudge someone in the direction of what to get you, consider these in your list to them.

Romance Trope Mug

What better way to curl up with a romance than with this coffee mug that is an homage to all the genre tropes. And remember that when you’re drinking from a coffee cup, no one can see (or judge) what you’re drinking. $16

Romance Reader Enamel Pins pic

Show off your love of romance with one of these enamel pins. And, this price is so nice that you can get one for you and one for your romance reading BFF. $11

Dirty Fairy Tales Keychain pic

Maybe you know someone who would love this keychain. I love the simple but succinct statement that is being made here. $8

Romance Novel Baseball Cap pic

Now, personally I look terrible in baseball hats. They just don’t get along with my super curly hair. That said, this is a true statement on a bad-ass baseball hat for those who don’t have the same problem I do. $23

Romance Lover Stickers pic

I love stickers! Always have and always will. That said, the trick is, and always has been, finding the perfect spot for them. $15

Romance Novel Sweatshirt pic

This sweatshirt is a perfect candidate for snuggling up with the romance novel of your choice. $27

Romance Novel Tshirt pic

Now you may be like me and not live in a place that has a lot of sweatshirt weather. If so, you might want to check out this T-shirt as an alternative. $20+

Romance Cover Postcards pic

Here is a collection of vintage romance novel cover postcards. I’ll agree this is a total vanity item but they’re still pretty. $9

Romance Reader Candle pic

You could also gift this candle. I love burning candles or incense when I’m reading, just to set the mood. Plus, these scents just whisper (not scream) relaxation to me. $15

Romance Bookmarks pic

And finally you can never have too many bookmarks. You can’t change my mind on this, especially when they’re also a way to proclaim your love for the genre. $2+

You can also check out our helpful 2021 Holiday Gift Guide for ideas for other book lovers in your life.

And remember that we’re looking for an Advertising Sales Manager! Do you like books and comics? Does helping advertisers reach an enthusiastic community of book and comics lovers intrigue you? This might be your job. Apply by December 5, 2021.

Don’t forget you can get three free audiobooks at Audiobooks.com with a free trial!

That’s all for today y’all. I’ll be back on Thursday with the latest in romance news. If you’re not already doing so, then you can follow me on Twitter under @PScribe801. Until then!

You Eat What You Are

Hey‌ ‌there‌ horror fans, ‌I’m‌ ‌Jessica‌ ‌Avery‌ ‌and‌ ‌I’ll‌ ‌be‌ ‌delivering‌ ‌your‌ ‌weekly‌ ‌brief‌ ‌of‌ ‌all‌ ‌that’s‌ ‌ghastly‌ ‌and‌ ‌grim‌ ‌in‌ ‌the‌ ‌world‌ ‌of‌ ‌Horror.‌ ‌Whether‌ ‌you’re‌ ‌looking‌ ‌for‌ ‌a‌ ‌backlist‌ ‌book‌ ‌that‌ ‌will‌ ‌give‌‌ you‌ ‌the‌ ‌willies,‌ ‌a‌ ‌terrifying‌ ‌new‌ ‌release,‌ ‌or‌ ‌the‌ ‌latest‌ ‌in‌ ‌horror‌ ‌community‌ ‌news,‌ ‌you’ll‌ ‌find‌ ‌it‌ ‌here‌ in‌ ‌The‌ ‌Fright‌ ‌Stuff.

As a life-long Hannibal fan (I was a strange, impressionable child), it was with great glee that I settled on cannibalism as the perfect post-food holiday newsletter topic. Of all the potential taboo horror themes to engage with, there’s just always been something about cannibalism that I find fascinating, though repellant. There are so many reasons that humans have, at one point or another, consumed other humans: to survive, to possess the dead, to remember and honor the dead, to debase, to take power from the death and consumption of another being. Whether the main character is the one doing the eating, or being hunted by those who eat, cannibalism always makes for a particularly disturbing yet compelling horror experience.

Besides, since many of us are probably still eating our way through a mountain of leftovers at this point, I’m sure we’re just about ready to say goodbye to food for a while.

Which is good.

Because after reading these books, you’re probably not going to be hungry

cover of tender is the flesh by agustina bazterrica

Tender is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica

Sarah Moses’ translation of Argentinian author Agustina Bazterrica’s 2017 horror novel was released this year, unleashing it’s nightmarish dystopia on a whole new audience of English speaking readers. The premise is harrowing: in a world in which all animal meat has become poisonous to ingest, humans have become the new livestock of choice. It is a chilling look at how far humanity might go, if only they are given permission. Marcos makes a living processing this “special meat”, all the while trying to focus on numbers, consignments, and processing not on who it really is that he makes his living. Until the day he’s given a “gift”. But the longer he spends with this “live specimen of the finest quality”, the less he is able to see her as just another number and begins to see and treat her like a human being. And with that comes the need to acknowledge the truth of what humanity has become.

cover of succulent prey by wrath james white

Succulent Prey by Wrath James White

A reader forewarned is a reader forearmed, so considered this your warning if you haven’t yet had the chance to read any of his work: Wrath James White is an exceptionally talented horror author. But he is also known for his extremity. Violent (frequently sexually), gory, disturbing, and grim, his books are not for readers who prefer their horror to be a bit less… visceral? But even as someone who doesn’t prefer hard-core horror, I do think that it’s worth reading at least one of his books, if only to appreciate his talent for the profoundly disturbing. Take Succulent Prey, the story of Joseph Miles who, as a child, was abducted and tortured by a cannibalistic serial killer. Joey was his only surviving victim, but now he may be in danger of becoming a monster in his own right. And unless he can find a way to cure himself of the killer growing inside of him, the woman he loves may pay the ultimate price.

the hunger alma katsu cover

The Hunger by Alma Katsu

I don’t know if you can really have a cannibalism horror list without including at least one example of survival cannibalism, which is a different kind of horrible than the deliberate cannibalism of some of the other titles. The desperation. The terrible necessity, driven to live at any cost. Katsu’s The Hunger takes a historical example of real survival cannibalism and adds a sinister, supernatural twist to an already harrowing event. The Donner Party makes their way into the mountains plagued by disaster and the gut feeling that something terrible is stalking them. When the group becomes stranded in the Sierra Nevadas, struggling to survive the elements, members of the party begin to disappear and fear and suspicion grow.

cover of manhunt by gretchen felker-martin

Manhunt by Gretchen Felker-Martin (February 22)

Manhunt won’t be out until February of next year, so you’ll have to wait a couple of months to get your hands on it. But early murmurings suggest it will be worth waiting for. Just be aware that, like Succulent Prey, Manhunt is not going to be a horror novel for those who prefer their nightmares a little less violently vivid. This is going to be a gorefest of cannibalism, violence, and cruelty. But for all that, the story Felker-Martin is telling is not bereft of humanity, or of softer feelings, like the tendency to band together for safety and to carve out families for ourselves in a world that has rejected us. Beth and Fran are trans women, trying to survive in a decimated future New England, in a world where anyone possessing too high a level of testosterone is doomed to become a cannibalistic monster. They end up banding together with trans man Robbie, and the three pit their survival against a terrifying army of TERFS, and any number of other horrors that the T plague has wrought.

If that’s not quite enough cannibalism for you, you can check out Liberty Hardy’s list of cannibal horror books at Book Riot for these and other carnivorous reads!

Don’t forget you can get three free audiobooks at Audiobooks.com with a free trial!

Fresh from the Skeleton’s Mouth

If you’ve started thinking ahead to the holidays, and you’re looking for some amazing horror books to gift, I recommend checking out this list of emerging horror authors. And I’d like to give and extra shout out to Hailey Piper’s The Worm and His Kings, which absolutely blew my mind, and V Castro’s fantastic, disturbing Goddess of Filth.

Stephen Graham Jones was interviewed by Wisconsin Public Radio’s To The Best Of Our Knowledge about monsters, his preference for writing monsters, and what our monsters say about us.

We’ve got a brand new podcast over at Book Riot! Adaptation Nation is all about TV and film adaptations of your favorite books! And given this glorious genre renaissance in which we find ourselves, you just know some of those adaptations are going to be horror!

We’re hiring an Advertising Sales Manager! Do you like books and comics? Does helping advertisers reach an enthusiastic community of book and comics lovers intrigue you? This might be your job. Apply by December 5, 2021.

As always, you can catch me on twitter at @JtheBookworm, where I try to keep up on all that’s new and frightening.

Cover of Dead Silence by S.A. Barnes

Dead Silence by S.A. Barnes (Tor Nightfire, January 25, 2022)

When you watched Titanic for the first time, did you think to yourself, “Wow, this would be so much better if only it had about, say 65% more ghosts. And if it was set in space.” Honestly, same. That’s where Dead Silence by S.A. Barnes comes in.

Okay, Dead Silence is not literally the story of the Titanic. There are already a few of those floating around out there already (no, I will not apologize for the pun). But this is the story of a wrecked ship. Only it’s set in space. And there are ghosts. Just like you’ve always wanted.

Claire Kovalik is exploring space with her beacon repair crew with absolutely zero interest in heading back to Earth. That’s when she receives a strange distress call from a surprising source: the Aurora, a famous luxury space-liner that vanished on its maiden tour of the solar system over twenty years ago. But when she arrives on the ship, it’s clear right away that something is not right. Hints of the supernatural are everywhere (whispers in the dark, words scribed in blood… you get the idea). Now Claire must uncover what happened on the Aurora before her crew is doomed to the same fate.

Other Things That Make Me Happy

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, so I thought I’d share with you some of my favorite Christmas recipes this month. Because food makes me happy. First up, my all-time fave (as of last year): Cranberry lemon bars. The key to getting those nice layers? Make sure the cranberry cools all the way before pouring the lemon on top.

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

white cat

Here’s a picture of little Cersei Anne meekly hiding under the table. She’s thankful everyone is so interested in seeing pics of her, but she’s also very scared. It’s okay, Cersei. Book people are good people.

She says meow.

Friends, I hope the rest of your Monday is wonderful and I hope you have time to get into some good books and we’ll meet again same time same place on Thursday!
